I completed B.Tech in Civil Engineering (1978) and M.Tech in Environmental Science and Engineering (1980) from IIT Bombay, and PhD in Environmental Engineering from Asian Institute of Technology, Thailand (1984). I joined Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay in 1984 as a faculty and set up Environmental Management Centre, an environment and sustainability consulting firm, in 1996. Later, in 2012, I founded Ekonnect Knowledge Foundation, a not-for-profit for promoting environmental education.

Over the past four decades my work has extensively revolved around areas like Environmental Policy, Environmental Assessment, Environmental and Social Management Frameworks for Financing Institutions, Business and Sustainability, Training and Capacity Building in Environmental Management.

Parallelly, I have worked with almost all key UN, multi-lateral and bi-lateral developmental institutions in the world. Prominent amongst these include UNEP Geneva, Paris and Osaka offices; UNDP and UNDESA, New York, UNIDO, Vienna; DFID, London; GIZ and CDG, Germany; APO, Tokyo; SIDA, Embassy of the Netherlands, New Delhi; FAO, the World Bank, IFC, European Investment Bank and the Asian Development Bank.

Apart from Government of India and various State Governments, my advice is sought beĀ  Government of Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Mauritius, Thailand and Vietnam. I am a member of several important committees such as member India Resources Panel, member Steering Committee on Resource Efficiency at Ministry of Environment, Forests & Climate Change, Govt of India, member Task Force, Sustainable Public Procurement, Ministry of Finance Govt of India, Advisory member to Circular Economy Club and several others.

I have published several books with UN University (translations available in Chinese and Japanese), Tokyo; Oxford University Press; UNEP, CRC Press, Centre for Environmental Education, and served as Honorary Editor of the Journal of Indian Water Works between 1998 and 2004. Some of my contributions have also been published in UNEP’s Green Economy Report, Global and Asia Waste Management Outlooks. I have authored several books which capture my work in the field of environmental management, sustainability and circular economy.

In 2010, I received the Distinguished Alumni Award of AITAA for Significant Contribution to International Affairs. I was elected as Board Certified Member at American Association of Environmental Engineering, was appointed as adjunct Professor at the Centre for Technology Alternatives in Rural Areas at IIT, Bombay between 2009-2017 and Dean at the IL&FS Academy for Applied Development 2013-2016.

My expertise lies in the field of Environmental Policy, Environmental Assessment, ESG at Financing Institutions, Business and Sustainability, Circular Economy, Capacity Building in Environmental Management, Modelling and Data Analytics.
